Skiers found this avalanche on the north side of Baronette Peak in YNP. Lots of collapsing cracking from the new snow over sugary facets. Photo: B. Fredlund

We dug a pit on Saddle Peak and found a couple of prominent layers of facetd snow. We posted a video on YouTube of the pit. Although we did not get out snow columns to propagate shears, the snow structure is very weak and will not support a big load of snow. Photo: GNFAC
We dug a snowpit on Saddle Peak at this spot. Further to the right and the slab started to get thicker (from wind-loading), which we did not like. Further to the left the snow was thin and rocky, but safer. Photo: GNFAC

Stability test results were poor in Taylor Fork on Friday. There is 2-1/2 feet of snow on the ground, and it's breaking in two spots: a foot under the surface on surface hoar, and sugary facets near the ground. Both broke at the same time; ECTP13. It will not take much snowfall to tip the scales towards avalanches. Photo: B. Nobel
