Lionhead area near West Yellowstone Cooke City
A layer of near surface facets that formed in early January did not produce unstable results in stability tests. This pit was dug on a NE facing slope around 9000 ft. This layer exists in many locations throughout the southern portions of our forecast area. Although it appears to be gaining strength, this layer should be looked for and assessed before committing to steep slopes. Photo GNFAC

Lionhead area near West Yellowstone
Over a foot of fresh snow produced natural avalanches off the Lionhead Ridge. This slide likely occurred during or immedately after the storm and was the result of a heavy wind load. Photo GNFAC
In the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone a buried layer of surface hoar was found on a NE facing slope arouind 8000 ft. This layer did not produce unstable results in stability tests, but is something to look for and assess when riding in the area. Photo GNFAC
