The surface of the snow is getting re-worked with all the clear weather.  Small facets are forming on top of a razor thin ice rust on many southeast to southwest facing slopes.  This process is called Radiation Recrystallization and can become a persistent weak layer once buried.  Photo: GNFAC

Strong winds over the past week have formed dense slabs below ridgelines.  In some areas these slabs rest over a layer of facets formed during the first week of January. Slopes where this combination exist will be the most likley to produce human triggered avalanches. Photo Jim Norlander
