12-13

This slide occurred outside of Cooke City on a NE facing slope around 9600 ft on Mt Repubic.  Heavy snow over the past 10 days has pushed some slopes past their breaking point.  It's difficult to say what type of weak layer this slide ran on, but the fact it broke 3 feet deep and propagated a few hundred feet across points to buried facets.  Photo Beau Fredlund

After 20" of fresh snow the snowpack on the Football Field was surprisingly thin.  Not only was the pack thin, it was weak.  During stability tests we got two ECT's to propagate on facets directly below a hard wind slab.  This is discouraging since this area will continue to see loading and lots of traffic.  Photo GNFAC

This natural avalanche was spotted by skiers in the south end of the Southern Madison Range.  The weight of new snow this week has exposed slopes that contain weak facets near the ground.  While these facets do not appear to be a widespread problem, they do exists on some slopes especially ones with a notherly aspect.  Photo: A Whitmore
