This avalanche was noticed yesterday (Sat, 12/29) on an east facing slope of Lionhead Ridge. A cornice likely triggered the slope. It was shallow and steep and the fracture did not propagate far. Large cornice chunks were still visible in the debris. Photo: GNFAC

This slide was triggered in an area where the snowpack was under a meter deep. The weak layer collapsed and propagated across the slope into a deeper snowpack. Photo GNFAC
Isolated slopes around Cooke City have unstable snow. This slide was human triggered and failed on a layer of facets near the ground. The slope was SW facing around 9500 ft. Photo GNFAC
